In nature, there is one key organism that stands alone as the base of the marine ecosystem.  Without this small giant, life in the ocean would be impossible.

As marine hobbyists, our main goal is to give our tank inhabitants the best possible home.  We do this by providing our corals with high quality light from many different available sources, lots of water flow to provide food and carry away nutrients that get removed by mechanical filtration.  We as aquatic caretakers strive for optimal water quality and require the proper levels of many elements and compounds.

But in nature, there is one key component that stands alone as the most important organism in the marine ecosystem.   Without this living wonder, life in the ocean would be impossible.  We are talking about phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton or marine microalgae are microscopic vegetable cells that can be found dispersed in the sea. Marine phytoplankton is considered a superfood containing vitamins, essential fatty acids, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and bioactive compounds involved in the metabolic activities of all living marine organisms.

In the ocean, phytoplankton is readily available in large quantities.  If you were to scoop a glass of seawater from a living reef, you would find around 75 to 100 million phytoplankton in that glass of water.

This invisible forest of phytoplankton is key to life on earth and provides the base of the marine food chain feeding small crustacean organisms known as zooplankton, which then in turn, feed larger organism like fish and corals which then in then in turn, feed even larger organisms like other fish and mammals.

On the other hand, in our aquariums, phytoplankton is a little harder to come by.  Due to skimmers, filter socks and other types of filtration, the concentration of phytoplankton in our tanks is limited and even become non-existent.

Until now we have dealt with the challenge of culturing our own or purchasing the many available phytoplankton products. Usually this requires refrigeration and manual dosing to the aquarium on a daily basis all while trying to keep the phytoplankton from being cross-contaminated. This often becomes too cumbersome for the busy aquarist and limits the amount of available zooplankton within our aquariums.

EasyBooster from EasyReefs makes feeding your aquarium beneficial phytoplankton simple to manage.  It is a super concentrated phytoplankton liquid gel for our reef tanks.  Best of all, it DOES NOT NEED REFRIGERATION!!!  You heard it right; EasyBooster can be preserved at room temperature for over 18months without any form of refrigeration.

EasyBooster is available in convenient one-shot blister packs or a larger 250ml pouch for a simple hands-off approach when used in conjunction with a dosing pump.  Connect the Easy Booster 25 to a liquid doser and have it be automatically add phytoplankton to your system once, twice, six, twelve, twenty four times a days.  Whatever you decide.

Start dosing a small amount on a daily basis and work your way up as the weeks go by.  On a 250 gal system, we recommend starting with 2ml daily the first week and then increase the dosage by 2ml every week until you reach 8 ml a day.

Recommended Dosage

New Tank:

  • Week One: 2 ml
  • Week Two: 4 ml
  • Week Three: 6 ml
  • Week Four: 8 ml

Established Tank:

  • Week Five: 10 ml
  • Week Six: 12 ml
  • Week Seven: 14 ml
  • Week Eight: 16 ml

In a well-established tank, you can continue increasing until you reach 16ml a day.  Every tank’s demand is different so keep an eye on your corals and critters for signs of overdosing.

For increased dispersion, be sure to add EasyBooster in an area of high flow such as near your return pump or near a flow pump if you are dosing directly into the tank.

Marine phytoplankton is considered a superfood because it contains vitamins, essential fatty acids (EPA, DHA, ARA, GLA), essential amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, minerals and bioactive compounds involved in the metabolic activities of all living beings in general, and of marine organisms in particular.

Easybooster Composition:

Isochrysis T-ISO (33%) / Nannochloropsis (31%) / Tetraselmis (18%) / Phaeodactylum (18%) The special characteristics of each one of the micro algae in this formula provide an optimum nutritional profile for aquarium animals.
