Do you want to unlock the full potential of your Maxspect Gyre pump and run it in both forward and reverse directions?

In this video, Carlos of CoralVue demonstrates how to program your Neptune System’s Apex controller to take advantage of the IceCap module and make your Maxspect Gyre run in Alternating Gyre Mode.

By the end of this video we will have covered how to:

  • Set out pump to switch directions and pulse at two different speeds
  • How to properly synchronize the pulsing flow with the directional pattern to ensure that the pump runs at the correct speed for each corresponding side
  • And during the night hours decrease the intensity of the pump

Now, this video will only cover the configuration and programming of your IceCap module with an APEX controller from Neptune Systems to run properly in Reverse Gyre Mode.

  • It assumes that you already have a fully configured and working APEX Controller as well as a free Variable Speed port
  • You should be familiar with the creation of virtual and regular outlets

Alternating Gyre Mode with two different speeds.

Placing the pump vertically on the back-right corner of our tank, we want the pump to run at 60% speed when pushing water along the back of the tank and then immediately switch to 30% speed when pushing water along the side (back to front) of the tank.  We reduce speed from 60% to 30% because the back side is usually longer distance than the back to front side.

We are placing our pump so that it is facing the front of the tank.  This way, when the pump pushes water from back to front, it is running forward and when the pump is pushing water along the back of the tank, it is running in reverse.

We also need to make sure that both speed and direction are synchronized so that the right intensity is used for the correct length.

To accomplish this, we need to create two different type of profiles:

  1. Speed Profile: Will control the pulsing speed of the pump
  2. Directional Profile: Will control the direction of the pump.  

IMPORTANT: Before we create the profiles, we must ensure that that corresponding Speed Profiles and Directional Profiles run synchronized (and NOT have be out of sync so that they run opposite to each other or one start half way through the other one) each speed profile MUST be an ODD numbered profile slot AND the corresponding directional profile MUST be the NEXT HIGHER EVEN NUMBERED empty profile slot.

For example:

PF13: Speed Profile (odd number profile ID)

PF14: Directional Profile (even number profile ID)

Speed Profiles

Day Profile:

  • Profile Name: SPD_Day
  • Control Type: Pump
  • Synchronize: No
  • Divide by ten: No
  • On time: 30
  • Off time: 30
  • Minimum intensity: 30  
  • Maximum intensity: 60

In the example above, the pump will pulse for 30 seconds at 60% and then for 30 seconds at 30% intensity.  The Maximum intensity is executed first even though is listed last.

Night Profile:

  • Profile Name: SPD_Night
  • Control Type: Pump
  • Synchronize: No
  • Divide by ten: No
  • On time: 60
  • Off time: 60
  • Minimum intensity: 30  
  • Maximum intensity: 60

In the night profile, the pump will pulse for 60 seconds at 60% and then for 60 seconds at 30% intensity.  The Maximum intensity is executed first even though is listed last.

Directional Profiles: 

In this case, directional profiles are a switch that turns the pump forward or in reverse.  There are only two possible outcomes.  

0% intensity = Forward motion

100% intensity = Reverse motion

There is no in-between.  

Day Profile: 

  • Profile Name: DIR_Day
  • Control Type: Pump
  • Synchronize: Yes
  • Divide by ten: No
  • On time: 30
  • Off time: 30
  • Minimum intensity: 0  
  • Maximum intensity: 100

In the example above, Maximum intensity is set to 100% which tells the pump to run in reverse direction and then Minimum intensity is set to 0% which tells the pump to run in forward motion.  Just like the speed profiles, the Maximum intensity is executed first so the pump will first run in reverse direction for 30 seconds and then switch to forward direction for 30 seconds.

Night Profile:

  • Profile Name: DIR_Night
  • Control Type: Pump
  • Synchronize: Yes
  • Divide by ten: No
  • On time: 60
  • Off time: 60
  • Minimum intensity: 0  
  • Maximum intensity: 100

In the example above, Maximum intensity is set to 100% which tells the pump to run in reverse direction and then Minimum intensity is set to 0% which tells the pump to run in forward motion.  Just like the speed profiles, the Maximum intensity is executed first so the pump will first run in reverse direction for 60 seconds and then switch to forward direction for 60 seconds.

Configuring Variable Speed Outlets

As we mentioned earlier, VarSpd3_I3 outlet will control the speed schedule and call the speed profiles while VarSpd4_I4 will control the directional schedule and call the directional profiles.  Both outlets must call their corresponding profiles at the same time to ensure that the pump runs at the right speed for the correct direction.

VarSpd3_I1 Outlet:

  • Name: XF150_SPD
  • Icon: Fan
  • Type: Advanced
  • Log: Yes

If Time 08:00 to 19:00 Then SPD_Day
If Time 19:00 to 08:00 Then SPD_Night
If FeedA 000 Then OFF

The XF150_SPD outlet will control the speed of the pump only.  

VarSpd4_I4 Outlet:

  • Name: XF150_DIR
  • Icon: Left/Right Arrow
  • Type: Advanced
  • Log: Yes

If Time 08:00 to 19:00 Then DIR_Day
If Time 19:00 to 08:00 Then DIR_Night
If FeedA 000 Then OFF

The XF150_DIR outlet will control the direction of the pump only.

By combining the XF150_SPD and the XF150_DIR outlets, we can now have a pump that will push water at 60% along the back of the tank and then switch directions forward and move water from the back of the tank to the front at 30% speed.
